Valentine’s Day Gifts- handmade with love.

February 11, 2010

Happy Valentine's Day!

This week I have prepared for Valentine’s Day. We love to celebrate this holiday! I will always take the opportunity to tell my family how much I love them. Valentine’s Day is also my daughter’s birthday. She was truly a love gift from God!

It is our tradition to make homemade gifts for the family every major holiday. All of our extended family lives near, so each holiday gives me an excuse to craft something for them! Actually, it is a heartfelt way to say I love you.  I believe it’s a concrete demonstration of how to love others. Add to that the benefits of holidays emphasizing the turning of the year and the seasons and you can see why we love them. Plus, it teaches the kids to be creative!

The Valentine's day gift bags I put together.

For Valentine’s Day this year, I made homemade cards, using some hand-carved stamps. I bundled little bags of goodies for everyone. They all thought I made the bags, but alas, sewing is not my strong suit. I purchased the felt bags at Michael’s. I briefly considered just smiling and saying thank you but my honesty got the better of me. The bag contained little packages of licorice mix and the best heart-shaped gingersnaps ever. They came from the Nyakers company, in Sweden. These delicate spicy cookies were in the cutest tin. I can think of many ways to use the tin. The adorable felt heart-shaped clothespin and the cookies I bought at Cost Plus World Market. I could spend an inheritance in that store. One of my favorites! In the past I have made chocolate-covered cashew clusters or chocolate truffles. One year we gave grass seed to grow on a sponge set in a heart-shaped cookie cutter. That was a hit! Although this year I did not hand-make everything in our gift, the spirit was still there.

Wishing you and your family a love-filled Valentine’s Day! Michelle
